Through a single app, Bicycle Health combines Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) with behavioral healthcare, drug screening, therapy, and peer support.
Bicycle Health is the largest medical group in the U.S. providing MOUD treatment via telemedicine. We have a full-time medical team of physicians, PAs, and nurses licensed across 32 states and we have insurance contracts that cover nearly 120 million lives.
We’ve served over 32,000 patients with our peer-reviewed care model, which has been shown to deliver best-in-class outcomes. Published data on our care model shows we have an 80% of insured patients retention at 90 days (the industry average is 44%) and a urine drug screen falsification rate of less than 3% (the industry average is 5 to 18%). See our published research at http://www.bicyclehealth.com/research.
After spending time in an orthopedic clinic to learn more about pain management and opioids, Ankit Gupta founded Bicycle Health in 2017 to increase access to high-quality, integrated medical and behavioral healthcare for people with opioid use disorder. Many of the patients he’d talked with got started on opioids for pain, by doctors, not knowing how problematic opioids are, and the patients detailed how opioids negatively affected them over time. Many patients discussed shame and stigma, ultimately preventing them from getting the care they desperately wanted and needed. The conclusion was clear: opioids are over-prescribed and under-managed in the United States, impacting far more people than most realize. And further, Ankit found medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment to be severely lacking.
Bicycle Health started out with a single clinic in Redwood City, California, but it became clear that we could reach even more people if our services were available online. Thus, Bicycle Health launched its virtual care platform in 2020, which provides empathetic, affordable, person-to-person care at scale, including medication management, behavioral health treatment, support groups, and care coordination, supporting patients wherever they’re at in their recovery journey.
By expanding our reach online, we opened up access to MAT to thousands of people who need it. About 30% of our patients are new to Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) treatment.
Our tech-enabled and evidence-based treatment allows us to effectively support patients as they transition off their opioid of choice.
This success rate is 40% higher than the standard set by in-person clinics.
“Our name, Bicycle Health, is a good metaphor for recovery,” Ankit explains.
Ankit learned how to ride a bike as a child, and it’s a skill that will stay with him for the rest of his life. Recovery is the same — a new skill that you learn and use, a skill that stays with you throughout your entire life.
Relapse is part of recovery, just like falling off a bike is part of learning to ride it. But when you fall off a bike, you can always hop back on. The same is true in recovery.
When Ankit first started Bicycle Health, he’d given up his car and was riding his bike everywhere. He describes the feeling of freedom, with the wind in his hair, as he was able to get places really easily.
We want this sense of freedom for our patients. In recovery, you are no longer bound by the grip of opioid use disorder. They finally achieve freedom — to live on their terms, to enjoy healthier relationships, to maintain steady employment, to embrace a better future.
We know you are resilient. You are strong enough to change. We can help you get there.
Suboxone treatment is a commonly used phrase for medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Suboxone treatment through Bicycle Health is only available to patients who receive a medical diagnosis of opioid use disorder from a Bicycle Health clinician.
Suboxone treatment is not for everyone as risks & side effects may occur. Suboxone contains an opioid medicine called buprenorphine that can cause serious and life-threatening breathing problems, especially if you take or use certain other medicines or drugs.
Talk to a healthcare provider about naloxone, a medicine available to patients for emergency treatment of an opioid overdose, including accidental use of SUBOXONE Sublingual Film by a child. If naloxone is given, you must call 911 or get emergency medical help right away to treat an overdose or accidental use of an opioid. To learn more go to www.suboxone.com
Treatment of opioid use disorder with Suboxone has been shown to block the euphoric effects of opioids and relieve opioid cravings.
Treatment of opioid use disorder with Suboxone has also been shown to reduce non-fatal drug overdoses by more than 300 percent, according to a UPMC study published in PubMed. And, treatment of opioid use disorder with Suboxone has been shown to lower healthcare costs by over 40 percent according to two independent studies published in Journal of Addiction Science & Clinical Practice and PubMed.
The ability to stay in treatment (“retention”) is the most commonly used measure in published medical literature for evaluating successful outcomes for opioid use disorder treatment programs.
Bicycle Health patients are nearly two-times as likely to stay in treatment and more than twice as likely to attend scheduled doctor visits than the industry average for in-person treatment for opioid use disorder. Learn more about the quality of our treatment program in this study published in the medical journal, BMJ Innovations.
Patient satisfaction is a qualitative metric. In 2022, researchers at the nonprofit RAND Corporation and Harvard University conducted independent qualitative research on telehealth treatment programs for patients with OUD and used Bicycle Health patients to do their research. They compared their experience with Bicycle Health to office-based opioid treatment (OBOT). The research was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine (JAM)
Patients in the study found Bicycle Health’s treatment program to be simple, safe and effective, relative to in-person care. The study found that more than 75% of patients interviewed were satisfied with the tele-OUD services they received from Bicycle Health.
That study also found that more than 75% of patients interviewed were satisfied with how easy it was to use Bicycle Health’s treatment program, and nearly all of the patients interviewed appreciated how quickly Bicycle Health was able to initiate treatment for them. Many patients in this study emphasized their frustrations with the stigma they experienced seeking in-person OUD care in the past.
Patients in this study also noted that Bicycle Health made it easy to get treatment, without facing in-person exposure to other people with OUD. Over 75% of participants with experience receiving in-person OUD treatment described their experience with Bicycle Health in positive terms, relative to in-person care.
Our science-backed approach boasts 95% of patients reporting no withdrawal symptoms at 7 days. We can help you achieve easier days and a happier future.
